Although I now use Surfshark VPN, I have been a NordVPN user for many years and I think I still have two or three years’ extended subscription left which demonstrates my commitment to the service.
I was not actively looking for an alternative, but through web browsing various online magazines, I stumbled upon Surfshark and I was intrigued not only by the glowing reviews but by the low price point. Having little else to do one day I downloaded the software and subscribed for two years as part of a special offer and all I can say is wow!
Surfshark Has A Host Of Features
As you would expect, setup is simplicity itself and Surfshark along with other leading VPN providers on connection looks for the fastest server at your geographic location. Doing a speed check Surfshark came in with higher speeds than NordVPN, not by a lot but, more importantly, speed degradation was lower than I anticipated.
If you are happy just to click and connect that is fine but you can dig down through various menu options there are a host of other features that you can activate and tweak.
With connections, you can allow it to start with Windows and auto-connect to the services fastest of the 1700+ servers worldwide or a favourite server of your choice, a server with a static IP, or further improve security through its multi-hop option which runs your connection through other countries.
Surfshark also has a CleanWeb facility that blocks trackers and a whitelist menu to allow programs and websites through the VPN wall.
Surfshark Has Multiple VPN Protocols
Surprisingly, there are multiple protocol choices including IKEv2, UDP, TCP, and something called Shadowsocks. This is an encrypted proxy that was developed to be free, open-source, and mainly used by Chinese people to bypass the Great Firewall restrictions. While using it covers your browser traffic, it is almost impossible to be detected and block it. Since internet censorship is increasing every year, Shadowsocks is getting more viable every day.
OK, I hear you say, so it’s technically robust and a safe, security choice, but what about pricing? The chart below shows the various plans, including the two-year option, I went for. Note, top right, there is a 30-day money-back promise. I don’t think I will be using that! To be fair, no-one in their right mind is going for the one month at a time option and VPN Pro labelled Surfshark as one of the hottest deals in 2020.
Please note that any subscription allows you to install Surfshark on unlimited devices.
