Is Your VPN Hiding Your True Location?
Discovering whether or not your VPN of choice is working effectively and hiding your true geographical location is very easy.
First, turn off your VPN and use an IP discovery service such as https://www.iplocation.net/. This should give you information about your true location. Next, turn on your VPN and choose somewhere exotic such as Malaysia (or anywhere else you fancy a quick eTrip too) and run the IP location service again and it will tell you where you are not, if you see what I mean.
https://www.iplocation.net/ will also give you extra information such as the host running your VPN’s server, the proxy addresses being used and even what operating system and browser you are using.
Investigate your VPN’s Reliability With A Leak Test
When you sign up for a VPN service you expect perfect privacy. When a VPN works properly, it creates a virtual tunnel between your device and your online destination. Your data is encrypted and your ISP is unable to tell what you are doing online. When a VPN works efficiently, no one can identify your true location as your real IP address is masked, but the nasty fact is that some services are not that robust and can still be giving out your IP address and location.
This is why you need to carry out a leak test.
The first thing you need to do is use an IP address locator such as IPLocation to discover your true IP address if you do not know it. You need to turn off your VPN connection otherwise your true address and location will be hidden. Write down the IP address and location and turn your VPN back on. Rerun the IP search and you should see a different IP address and location.
If the IP address is the same you need to carry out a leak test using a service such as DNSLeakTest.
With your VPN connected, run the leak test and await the results. If you see your proper IP address then the VPN is leaking your data. If this happened to me I would immediately change VPN provider to one that has proven reliability. If you are reluctant to do this, ways of fixing the leak are given at https://www.dnsleaktest.com/how-to-fix-a-dns-leak.html.
